Today is Groundbreaking day for the build 31 house, we saw a lot of community members come support the event to break ground. We are excited to see the site progress!!
An asymmetrical roof pitch versus a symmetrical one was one of our bigger design debates. The symmetrical pitch was ultimately what was chosen, but in this iteration you see the first sketches of our built in bench and bookshelf at the entry. This component became a highlight of the entry and created a focus on the ceiling pitch. So, we continued to iterate it for simplicity and functionality, which is the favorite part of some students in designing this home. Stay tuned for the bench closeup!
Work work working on the window header of the mock-up. Students in teams of three completed the walls and roof, getting real hands on experience of how SIPs are constructed and put together! We love our SIP system! 😍
Where it started… the site originally was on the west side of a lot that was to be split in half. After soil and compaction testing our site moved to the east side, however the lot remains part of plans to build a mirrored house in a stick frame construction. This was a point of interest to compare prefab with Raycore, our supplier, and traditional stick build.
To kick off construction, studio students fabricated a mock-up of structurally insulated panels. Our students in action took the drawings and ran with it, gaining skills in reading construction documents, fitting materials to size and constructing them to make up what is essentially a building section of the house the studio will later construct using the same methods.
Thank you @kcdesignweek and @mattierhodescenter for helping us host our exhibit of past and current projects for KC design week. We’re grateful for getting to be a part of #kcdesignweek and to share our building mock-up and the current studio work! We enjoyed chatting with everyone that made it and we will see you next year!
